Option 1: Install a player from Google Play
This is the quickest route and keeps the app updated automatically.
- SearchOn Google TV, go to Apps and select Search for apps (on Android TV, open Google Play Store).
- InstallSearch for the player your representative recommends — for example TiviMate, which is built for TV remotes — and install it.
- Sign inChoose Xtream Codes and enter the server URL, username and password, or paste your M3U link.
- Wait for the guideThe first load downloads channels and the TV guide; give it a minute.
Some players are free with a paid premium tier (TiviMate works this way). The free version is enough to test your setup.
Option 2: Sideload a player that isn’t on Google Play
- Turn on developer modeGo to Settings › System › About and click Android TV OS build about seven times until you see “You are now a developer”.
- Install DownloaderInstall Downloader by AFTVnews from Google Play.
- Allow it to install appsOpen Downloader and enter the link your representative sends. The first time, Android asks for permission — choose Settings and switch Downloader to Allowed. (On some models this is under Settings › Apps › Security & restrictions › Unknown sources.)
- Install and sign inConfirm the installation, open the player and add your login.
Only sideload files you trust. Google Play Protect may scan or warn about apps installed from outside the store — that’s expected for sideloaded apps.
Device notes
| Device | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer | Has a built-in Ethernet port — use it for live TV. |
| Chromecast with Google TV | Only 8 GB of storage; keep it tidy and clear the player cache now and then. No Ethernet port without a USB-C hub or adapter. |
| Nvidia Shield TV | Fast processor and Ethernet; one of the smoothest boxes for big playlists. |
| Google TV sets (Sony, TCL, Hisense) | Install straight on the TV — no extra box needed. |
| Generic Android TV boxes | Quality varies a lot; boxes without Google certification may lack Google Play. |
Android phones and tablets
Most Android TV players also have a phone version on Google Play. Install it, sign in with the same details, and you can watch around the house. Every device watching at the same time uses one screen from your plan.
Settings that make a difference
- Frame-rate matching: if your device offers it (often in the display settings), turn it on so fast sports motion looks smoother.
- Decoder: if you hear audio but see a black screen, switch the player between hardware and software decoding.
- Clear the cache: Settings › Apps › [your player] › Clear cache fixes many freezes without losing your login.

Google TV is Google’s newer interface on top of Android TV. Apps and setup steps are almost identical; mainly the menus look different.
