Which Fire TV Stick do you have?
Amazon is moving some new Fire TV devices from Fire OS (Android-based) to Vega OS (Linux-based). Vega OS can’t sideload apps at all, so you can only use players listed in the Amazon Appstore.
| Device | System | Sideloading |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max | Fire OS | Yes |
| Fire TV Stick 4K / 4K Plus | Fire OS | Yes |
| Fire TV Stick Lite and HD (1st gen) | Fire OS | Yes |
| Fire TV Cube | Fire OS | Yes |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select | Vega OS | No — Appstore apps only |
| Fire TV Stick HD (2nd gen) | Vega OS | No — Appstore apps only |
Go to Settings › My Fire TV › About. “Fire OS” in the software version means every step below applies. If it just says “OS” and the version starts with 1., it’s a Vega OS stick — skip to Step 3 and use the Appstore.
Your Amazon account and region
The Appstore you see follows the country on your Amazon account. A stick registered to an Amazon.com.au account shows the Australian catalogue, so an app you’ve read about overseas may not appear. If a player is missing, check the account’s country before anything else.
Step 1: Allow installs (Fire OS sticks)
- Unhide Developer optionsOpen Settings › My Fire TV › About and press Select on the stick’s name seven times until “You are now a developer” appears. Go back one screen.
- Turn installs onIn Developer options you’ll find either an Apps from Unknown Sources switch (turn it on) or an Install unknown apps list, where you’ll allow Downloader in the next step.
Step 2: Install Downloader
- SearchChoose Find › Search, type Downloader and install the free app by AFTVnews (orange icon).
- Allow itOn newer Fire OS versions go to Settings › My Fire TV › Developer options › Install unknown apps and switch Downloader on.
Step 3: Install the player
- In the Appstore? Install it like any other app — the only option on Vega OS.
- Not in the Appstore? Open Downloader, type the link your representative sends, and confirm the install.
Only install files from a source you trust. The player is just the app that shows channels and the guide — it doesn’t include any content by itself.
Step 4: Sign in
| Login type | What you enter | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Xtream Codes | Server URL, username, password | Usually loads the TV guide automatically |
| M3U playlist | One playlist link | Some players need a separate guide (EPG) link |
Type the server URL exactly, including http:// or https:// and any port such as :8080. The free Amazon Fire TV phone app has a keyboard that makes long links much easier than the remote.
Step 5: Get the most from your NBN
- Wire it if the modem is nearby. Amazon’s Ethernet adapter plugs into the stick’s power port. If the NBN connection box is at the other end of the house, a mesh Wi-Fi system usually beats a single modem.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi and keep the stick out from behind the TV with the HDMI extender in the box.
- Check speed on the stick itself — not on your phone next to the modem. As a guide, Netflix suggests 5 Mbps for Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K per screen.

Common Fire TV Stick problems
No Developer options or Install unknown apps
Repeat the seven presses on the stick’s name — or it’s a Vega OS model, which has no sideloading option.
Player installed but no channels
Check the server URL and login for typos (they’re case-sensitive), then restart the player.
Picture freezes after a while
Clear the player’s cache under Settings › Applications › Manage Installed Applications, and uninstall apps you don’t use to free storage.
Questions
Will IPTV work on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select?
Only with a player that’s in the Amazon Appstore. The 4K Select runs Vega OS, which doesn’t allow sideloading.
Why can’t I find an app my friend overseas uses?
The Appstore catalogue follows the country on your Amazon account, so availability differs between Australia and other countries.
Is NBN 25 enough?
For one HD stream, usually yes. For several screens or 4K, a faster plan helps — but test the speed on the stick first, because Wi-Fi is often the real limit.
Do I need a VPN?
No. A VPN isn’t part of the setup and can slow your connection, so leave it off while you test.
