Quick diagnosis
| What happens | Likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Every channel buffers, any time | Wi-Fi or the device | Checks 1–4 |
| Only from about 7 to 11 pm | Busy hours or too many devices at home | Checks 2, 3 and 7 |
| One or two channels only | That stream | Check 9 — tell your representative |
| Sound but black picture | Player decoder | Check 6 |
| Fine, then freezes after a while | Full cache, storage or heat | Checks 1 and 5 |
Your NBN connection type matters
| Connection | What it means for streaming |
|---|---|
| FTTP (fibre to the premises) | Most consistent speeds; Wi-Fi is usually the weak link. |
| FTTC and HFC | Generally reliable; speeds can dip at busy times. |
| FTTN / FTTB | Uses copper for the last stretch, so the speed you actually get depends on distance and line quality — test it rather than trusting the plan name. |
| Fixed Wireless and Satellite | More variable; choose HD instead of 4K and keep other devices quiet while you watch. |
You’ll find your connection type in your provider’s account or on the NBN connection box. The ACCC’s broadband monitoring treats roughly 7 to 11 pm as busy hours — the time to test.
The checks, in order
1. Restart the modem and the device
Power both off at the wall for 30 seconds. Start the modem first, then the TV or stick once the internet light is steady.
2. Measure speed on the TV device
Run a speed test in the TV’s browser or a speed-test app, at the time you usually watch. Around 5 Mbps per HD screen and 15 Mbps for 4K is the benchmark Netflix uses.
3. Plug in a cable
Ethernet removes the most common cause of stutter. Most TVs have a port; Fire TV Sticks need Amazon’s Ethernet adapter.
4. Fix the Wi-Fi
Connect to 5 GHz, move the modem out of the garage or cupboard, and in a larger or double-storey home add a mesh node near the TV.
5. Clear the player cache
- Fire TV: Settings › Applications › Manage Installed Applications › [player] › Clear cache
- Google TV: Settings › Apps › [player] › Clear cache
- Samsung, LG, VIDAA: close the app fully; reinstall if that doesn’t help
6. Change player settings
Switch between hardware and software decoding, and set a larger buffer if the player offers it.
7. Lighten the load at home
Game downloads, cloud backups and other streams compete for the same connection. Pause big downloads while you watch.
8. Drop to HD on slower connections
A steady HD picture beats 4K that keeps stopping — especially on FTTN, Fixed Wireless or Satellite.
9. Tell us exactly what you see
If one channel still stutters after all that, send your representative the channel, the time and your device.
Device-specific steps
Each guide has its own troubleshooting: Fire TV Stick and Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL TVs.
Questions
Why does IPTV only buffer at night?
From about 7 to 11 pm both your home network and the wider network are at their busiest. Wired connections and fewer simultaneous downloads help most.
Will a faster NBN plan fix it?
Only if speed is the bottleneck. If a test on the TV device shows well over 15 Mbps and it still buffers, look at Wi-Fi, the device and its cache first.
Is FTTN good enough for IPTV?
Often, yes — but FTTN speeds vary by line, so test on the TV at night and choose HD if 4K struggles.
Does clearing the cache remove my login?
No. Clearing the cache keeps your login; “Clear data” or reinstalling removes it.
