Option 1: install a player from Google Play
The quickest route, and the app updates itself.
- SearchOn Google TV open Apps and choose Search for apps; on Android TV open the Google Play Store.
- InstallSearch for the player your representative suggests — TiviMate, for example, is designed around a TV remote — and install it.
- Sign inChoose Xtream Codes and enter the server URL, username and password, or paste your M3U link.
- Give it a minuteThe first load downloads the channel list and TV guide.
Some players are free with a paid premium tier, and TiviMate works that way. The free version is plenty for testing your setup.
Option 2: sideload a player that isn’t on Google Play
- Switch on developer modeGo to Settings › System › About and select Android TV OS build about seven times until it says you’re now a developer.
- Install DownloaderGet Downloader by AFTVnews from Google Play.
- Let it install appsOpen Downloader and type in the link your representative gave you. The first time, Android asks for permission — choose Settings and set Downloader to Allowed. (On some models this sits under Settings › Apps › Security & restrictions › Unknown sources.)
- Install and sign inConfirm the install, open the player and add your login.
Only sideload files from a source you trust. Google Play Protect may scan or warn about apps from outside the store, which is normal for sideloaded apps.
Device notes
| Device | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer | Has an Ethernet port built in — use it for live TV. |
| Chromecast with Google TV | Only 8 GB of storage, so keep it tidy and clear the player’s cache now and then. No Ethernet port without a USB-C adapter or hub. |
| Nvidia Shield TV | Fast, with Ethernet; one of the smoothest boxes for large playlists. |
| Google TV tellies (Sony, TCL and others) | Install straight on the TV — no extra box needed. |
| Generic Android TV boxes | Quality varies a lot, and boxes without Google certification may not have Google Play. |
Got a telly from another maker, such as Samsung or LG? Those don’t run Android apps — see the smart TV guide.
Android phones and tablets
Most Android TV players have a phone version on Google Play. Install it, sign in with the same details and you can watch anywhere in the house. Each device watching at the same time uses one screen from your plan.
Settings worth changing
- Frame-rate matching: if your device offers it (usually under display settings), switch it on so fast-moving sport looks smoother.
- Decoder: sound but a black picture? Switch the player between hardware and software decoding.
- Clear the cache: Settings › Apps › [your player] › Clear cache cures many freezes and keeps your login.
More fixes, in the order that usually works: how to stop IPTV buffering.
